Course Description
This course prepares participants to work as part of an asphalt paving crew as a paver operator, screed operator, or both. Participants learn about the demand for paver and screed operators, along with salary expectations, job perks, and career opportunities in the field. Through online instruction and hands-on training, participants learn about construction site safety procedures, hazard identification and mitigation, OSHA and PPE requirements, paver types and components, screed controls, and material flow. Participants also learn about mat quality, paving patterns, grades, drainage, and compaction, as well as equipment inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques. This course is designed primarily for incumbent workers with prior asphalt paving experience and requires access to employer-provided equipment for hands-on training. Participants who complete the program are ready to support smooth, durable asphalt paving projects as confident, safety-conscious operators. Participants who successfully complete the theory and hands-on lab for this course earn an ACCS credential.
Academic Pathways: This non-credit workforce training course may also help participants earn college credit through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or articulation opportunities toward select certificate or degree programs at participating Alabama community colleges. Credit awards are granted solely at the discretion of the receiving institution in accordance with its academic policies.
