Asphalt Lab Technician Training Course (Under Construction)

This course prepares participants to ensure the quality and compliance of asphalt materials on real-world projects. Participants build essential safety practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response for hazards such as chemical spills and harmful fumes. The training covers sampling and reducing aggregate samples, conducting sieve analyses, and testing specific gravity and moisture content to meet mix design requirements. Participants also learn the principles of asphalt mix design, calculating volumetric properties such as air voids (Va), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA), and voids filled with asphalt (VFA), and optimizing binder content and specific gravity (Gmm). Hands-on training develops mastery of key lab tools so participants can evaluate mixtures through compaction and quality testing that meets industry standards. Participants who successfully complete the theory and hands on lab for this course earn an ACCS credential.

Academic Pathways: This non-credit workforce training course may also help participants earn college credit through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or articulation opportunities toward select certificate or degree programs at participating Alabama community colleges. Credit awards are granted solely at the discretion of the receiving institution in accordance with its academic policies.
