The Alabama Community College System provides Real Life Education. Starting smart at one of 24 colleges is easy. With flexible class schedules, high school students, career veterans and every student in between can succeed.
NO COST TRAINING HEADLINE
The training is offered at no cost, thanks to legislative appropriations that allow for the development and deployment of training statewide. A unique feature of Skills for Success training is how quickly it can be completed. Part of the training is offered online, with self-paced interactive learning. Upon completing the online portion of the course, students then complete hands-on training with qualified instructors at any of the 24 community colleges around the state. The in-person labs simulate real work experience and test students for mastery of skills.
Participants who complete training also earn a certificate of completion from the local Community College, which signals to businesses that the individual has mastered the skills taught in the program and is immediately ready for employment. Once the curriculum for each program is created by the Innovation Center and tested at each pilot college, it can be replicated by other colleges in other parts of the state rapidly.

HEAR ONE OF OUR SUCCESS STORIES
“The Skills for Success program is a really valuable resource for people looking to start a new career. The program exceeded my expectations, it prepared me. After the completion of the course, I waited about a week, walked into the store and after 30 minutes, I was hired. If it wasn’t for the Skills for Success program, I don’t know what direction I would be taking my life…meaningless job, after meaningless job. This program gave me a job I look forward to every day and that I can see a future in.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – An update on how a free training course for bus drivers is helping school districts across Alabama. That free course through the Alabama Community College System is the first step in drivers getting a license to drive a school bus. It’s a vital position that so many districts still need to fill.
Since announcing their free training, the Alabama Community College System has helped 115 school districts. ACCS courses are funded through the state legislature, which allows them to offer no cost training for people looking to become bus drivers. The cost of the training was too expensive for interested candidates, and after ACCS removed that barrier, they helped about 2,000 people become bus drivers.
Houston Blackwood, the Workforce Director for ACCS, said this allows drivers to get the knowledge they need quickly and get behind the wheel for a local school system quicker than ever before.
“Our course really just lays out the life of a school bus driver. We cover all the federal and state CDL requirements and so now they are safe, credentialed, and fully aware of what they are about to do and I think that makes a really good school bus driver. Blackwood says they will continue to offer these trainings.
